Engine Oil Replacement Reminder Light (MAINT REQD) [1]

For vehicles sold in the U.S.A., the light serves as a reminder to replace the engine oil and illuminates briefly when the ignition is turned to ON
After the maintenance light is reset, the system begins counting mileage toward the 4,500‑mile and 5,000‑mile reminders.
4,500 miles: Light illuminates for 3 seconds then flashes for 12 seconds at ignition ON.
5,000 miles: Light illuminates at ignition ON and stays ON.

Manufacturer's Recommendations [1]

Viscosity: SAE 5W- 30
4.0L V6 — 1GR-FE engine oil capacities:
- Two-wheel drive models (except PreRunner)
  - With filter: 4.8 US qt (4.5 L)
  - Without filter: 4.4 US qt (4.2 L)
- Four-wheel drive models and PreRunner
  - With filter: 5.5 US qt (5.2 L)
  - Without filter: 5.2 US qt (4.9 L)
- KohliBuilt requires the oil filter be replaced whenever the engine oil is changed!

1. ENGINE OIL VISUAL INSPECTION

Using the dipstick to visually check your engine's oil provides a quick snapshot of your engine's health. This brief inspection can reveal oil leaks, internal coolant leaks, mechanical issues, and more.

To obtain an accurate level reading, ensure the following requirements are met:

The vehicle is on level ground.
The engine is at operating temperature and turned off.
The engine has been in the off state for over 2 minutes to allow the oil to drain within the engine.

Remove the dipstick and wipe clean with a towel.
Reinstall the dipstick, ensuring it is fully seated.
Remove the dipstick and visually inspect the engine oil and its level.

CAUTION: The dipstick is located near the exhaust manifold. Use caution to avoid touching the hot exhaust manifold.

NOTICE: Exercise caution to avoid spilling engine oil on any vehicle components. Clean up any spilled engine oil.

CAUTION:

1. SAFELY LIFT & SUPPORT THE VEHICLE

It is possible to change the oil without lifting the vehicle, depending on its ground clearance and/or tire size.
If your vehicle requires support on jacks, refer to the reference graphic for lift points.

NOTICE: If removing wheel lug nuts with a wrench, loosen but DO NOT remove lugs before lifting.

CAUTION: If ONLY lifting the front of the vehicle, always to use proper jack stands and wheel chocks.

2. LOCATE ENGINE OIL DRAIN BOLT

Locate the engine's oil pan and drain bolt, and ensure that there is enough clearance to complete the oil change.

PRO TIP: Aftermarket skidplates can cover and protect the oil pan sump where the drain plug is located. Removal of the skidplate might be required.

3. READY OIL DRAIN PAN

Drain pan.
Spill pan.
Absorbent pan.

USED OIL

APPEARANCE: Liquid, black and viscous (thick), petroleum odor.
PHYSICAL HAZARDS: Combustible liquid.
HEALTH HAZARDS:

4. REMOVE DRAIN PLUG

CAUTION: Motor oil may be hot — handle with care!

NOTICE: Dispose of used motor oil properly. Avoid skin contact and prevent environmental contamination.

5. REMOVE OIL FILTER

Pro Tip: The oil filter sits at the front upper portion of the engine. When you remove it, oil can drain from the filter housing into the engine bay. Toyota provides a built‑in catch can with a drain nipple; attach a 5/16" ID hose to that nipple and route the hose to a drain pan beneath the vehicle. A 3 ft hose gives good reach without excess slack.

6. INSTALL NEW OIL FILTER

Verify that the old filter’s gasket has been completely removed from the engine mounting surface. A stuck gasket can cause leaks and improper sealing.
Before installing the new oil filter, apply a small amount of fresh engine oil to its gasket. This helps create a proper seal and makes removal easier during the next oil change.

7. INSTALL DRAIN BOLT

Always install with a new drain bolt washer.
Toyota OEM Torque: 30 ft·lbf [2]

8. IF SKID PLATE WAS REMOVED, REINSTALL

9. REMOVE VEHICLE FROM JACK STANDS AND LOWER ONTO LEVEL GROUND

10. ADD ENGINE OIL

Add the manufacturer’s specified oil capacity.

Capacity: 5.5 US qt (with filter)
